Yellow Oyster: Mushroom of the month for June 2022

Yellow Oyster is the mushroom of the month for June 2022

The Yellow Oyster is the mushroom of the month for June as we shift from spring to summer.

Also known as Pleurotus citrinopileatus, the Yellow Oyster mushroom’s bright colour is bound to catch eyes. The mushrooms grow into a bouquet with small white stems and yellow caps. It’s not just a little yellowish-white hue either – it is banana yellow.

Of course, there’s more to the Yellow Oyster than its looks. It is a delicate mushroom that we must handle extra carefully when harvesting so you get to bring them home in quality shape. That means they are tender when cooked.

Talented people grow palm trees outside in Canada – it is much easier to grow Yellow Oyster mushrooms indoors for that tropical look.

The Yellow Oysters have a mild nutty flavour as well which works well with meats, salads, soups, pasta, noodles, and pretty much any dish you think would benefit from another depth of flavour. Some say they taste a little like cashew. You can also sauté the Yellow Oysters and mix them into omelets or add them to toast with some chives and a creamy spread. After cooking these mushrooms, the yellow slightly fades as the caps and stems brown in the pan.

This is a mushroom to try growing at home as summer weather approaches. The Yellow Oyster is a warmer strain of Oyster mushroom native to southeast Asia and tends to grow in tropical climates. Yellow Oyster mushrooms grow in tight clusters. As time progresses, the caps expand and curve downwards. If left too long, the caps can fade white.

Yellow Oyster Grow Kits grow in temperatures between 18 and 26 Celsius (64 and 79 Fahrenheit). It is a mushroom to try growing during the summer when it gets hotter in the home. The key is to keep those mushrooms growing in a tropical setup by misting the inside of the humidity tent at least three to five times a day. By misting the tent about 15 to 20 pumps each time, it will have droplets that will hydrate the mushroom block.

June is the first month we will be selling Yellow Oyster Grow Kits, so become one of the first people to try one out! Head over to the shop page to check them out.
